Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about judo classes at Kaizen

What should I wear to my first judo class?

Comfortable athletic clothing works great for your first class: a t-shirt and athletic shorts or sweatpants. Avoid clothing with zippers, buttons, or pockets that can catch fingers. We train barefoot on mats, so no shoes needed. After you decide to continue, you'll want to purchase a judo gi (uniform). We can help you find the right one.

How much do classes cost at Kaizen?

We offer flexible monthly memberships for youth and adult programs, along with drop-in rates, private lessons, and family discounts. Your first class is always free. Visit our pricing page for full details.

Is judo safe for kids? What about injuries?

Judo is one of the safest martial arts for children. Kids learn through grappling arts with age-appropriate instruction, proper falling techniques (ukemi), and controlled practice. Our instructors are trained in youth safety, and we maintain low student-to-instructor ratios to ensure proper supervision.

What age can my child start?

Our youngest program, Otter Pups, starts at age 4. It's a play-based class focused on movement games, tumbling, and safe falling, perfect for building coordination and confidence. From there, kids progress through Mongoose (6-9), Honey Badgers (9-12), and Wolverines (12-14).

What's the difference between judo and BJJ?

Judo focuses primarily on standing techniques (throws, trips, and takedowns) along with ground work including pins, chokes, and arm locks. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) emphasizes ground fighting, submissions, and positional control. Both are grappling arts. Many of our students train both! Judo builds excellent throwing skills that complement BJJ ground work.

Do I need to be fit to start judo?

Not at all. Judo meets you where you are. Many of our adult students started with no athletic background. You'll build strength, flexibility, coordination, and cardiovascular fitness as you train. Our adult program welcomes complete beginners and adjusts intensity to your current fitness level.

How long does it take to get a black belt?

On average, earning a black belt in judo takes 5-8 years of consistent training. At Kaizen, belt progression moves at your own pace. There's no pressure or artificial timelines. Each rank has clear technique requirements, so you always know what to work on next.

What is the Kuzushi Framework curriculum?

The Kuzushi Framework is our evidence-based judo curriculum built around three pillars: Grips, Movements, and Throws. Rather than teaching techniques in isolation, we connect grip patterns to movement patterns to throwing mechanics. This framework ensures students build complete, connected judo from day one.

What makes Kaizen different from other martial arts schools?

Three things set Kaizen apart: (1) Our coaching staff includes nationally ranked competitors and experienced instructors who bring elite-level knowledge to every class. (2) Our evidence-based Kuzushi Framework curriculum provides structured, transparent progression instead of arbitrary belt timelines. (3) Our safety-first philosophy with controlled training environments at every level.

Do you have programs for adults who have never done martial arts?

Absolutely. Our adult program welcomes complete beginners alongside experienced practitioners. Our instructors tailor training to your experience level, and belt progression moves at your pace. Many of our adult students started with zero martial arts experience.

What should parents expect during a trial class?

Parents are welcome to observe from our designated viewing area. Your child will participate in age-appropriate activities with our instructors. Expect warm-ups, movement games, basic technique introduction, and lots of fun. No prior experience is needed. Wear comfortable athletic clothes and arrive 10 minutes early so we can meet you and answer any questions.
