Safety & Standards
Our commitment to safety-first martial arts training
Our Safety-First Approach
At Kaizen Judo and Jiu Jitsu, safety is not just a priority—it's the foundation of everything we do. We believe that martial arts training should build confidence, character, and skill without unnecessary risk. Our comprehensive safety protocols ensure that students of all ages can train effectively while minimizing the risk of injury.
We are particularly proud of our youth programs. Children learn the art of judo and BJJ through controlled, supervised grappling that develops physical skills and mental discipline in a safe environment. Our evidence-based approach to instruction means students learn proper technique from day one, preventing the development of unsafe habits.
Our Safety Standards
Youth Safety Policy
Youth Safety Policy
At Kaizen, youth safety is our highest priority. Our comprehensive youth safety policy ensures that all children train in a secure, nurturing environment, focusing exclusively on grappling arts where controlled, safe practice is the foundation. All instructors undergo background checks and are certified in youth-specific martial arts instruction. We maintain appropriate student-to-instructor ratios to ensure every child receives proper attention and supervision. Our facility is designed with youth safety in mind, featuring proper matting, padding, and equipment sized for children. We have zero tolerance for bullying or aggressive behavior, and we teach students to respect boundaries, both their own and others. Parents are encouraged to observe classes and are kept informed about their child's progress and any safety concerns.
Supervision Standards
Supervision Standards
Professional supervision is maintained at all times during classes and open training sessions. Our instructors are trained to monitor the training floor continuously, watching for unsafe practices, mismatched partners, or students who need additional guidance. We maintain clear sight lines throughout the facility to ensure no area goes unobserved. For youth classes, we enforce strict student-to-instructor ratios that exceed industry standards, ensuring every child can be properly supervised. During sparring or randori sessions, instructors actively circulate and intervene when necessary to prevent injuries or ensure proper technique. We have established protocols for situations requiring immediate attention, and all instructors are trained to respond quickly and appropriately. Supervision extends to transition times between classes and to common areas to maintain a consistently safe environment.
Facility Safety
Facility Safety
Our dojo is purpose-built with safety as a primary consideration. Training areas feature high-quality martial arts mats that provide proper cushioning and traction. All mats are regularly inspected, cleaned, and maintained to prevent injuries from improper surfaces. Wall padding protects students from accidental contact with hard surfaces. Equipment is regularly inspected and replaced when showing signs of wear. The facility maintains proper ventilation, lighting, and temperature control for comfortable, safe training. Emergency exits are clearly marked and accessible. We maintain first aid supplies and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) equipment on site, with staff trained in their use. Regular safety audits ensure our facility continues to meet or exceed safety standards. Cleanliness protocols include daily mat cleaning and sanitization, contributing to a hygienic training environment that prevents the spread of skin infections.
Parent Involvement
Parent Involvement
We believe parents are essential partners in their children's martial arts journey and their safety. Parents are welcome to observe classes from designated viewing areas that allow clear visibility without disrupting instruction. We maintain open communication channels, encouraging parents to share any concerns or questions about their child's training, safety, or progress. Before starting classes, we conduct intake meetings to understand each child's individual needs, medical considerations, and any concerns parents may have. We provide parents with clear information about what to expect in classes, safety protocols, and how we handle various situations. Regular updates keep parents informed about curriculum progression and their child's development. For younger students, we ensure smooth drop-off and pick-up procedures that maintain security and prevent unauthorized individuals from accessing students. Parent education sessions occasionally address topics like supporting training at home, understanding belt progression, and reinforcing the values taught in class.
Code of Conduct
Code of Conduct
All students, parents, and instructors are expected to uphold Kaizen's code of conduct, which emphasizes respect, discipline, and safety. Students must respect instructors, training partners, and the training space. We expect students to follow instructions promptly, train with control, and never intentionally harm training partners. Appropriate language and behavior are required at all times. Students must maintain personal hygiene standards to ensure a pleasant training environment for all. We prohibit any form of bullying, harassment, or discrimination. Training under the influence of alcohol or drugs is strictly forbidden. Students must inform instructors of injuries or medical conditions that might affect their training. Proper training attire (clean gi or appropriate athletic wear) is required. Students who repeatedly violate the code of conduct may be suspended or expelled from the program. Our code of conduct creates a culture of mutual respect and safety that allows all students to train effectively and enjoyably.
SafeSport Certified Instructors
SafeSport Certified Instructors
All Kaizen black belt instructors are SafeSport certified through USA Judo's mandatory certification program. SafeSport training covers recognizing and reporting abuse, misconduct prevention, and creating safe environments for athletes of all ages. USA Judo requires every registered black belt to complete this certification and maintain it with regular renewals. This means every instructor on our mat has been trained to identify warning signs, uphold athlete welfare standards, and maintain appropriate boundaries. SafeSport certification is one more layer of accountability that gives parents confidence their children are training in a professionally managed environment.
Emergency Procedures
Emergency Procedures
Kaizen maintains comprehensive emergency procedures to handle various situations that might arise. All instructors are trained in basic first aid and CPR, with certifications kept current. In case of injury during class, we follow established protocols to assess the situation, provide appropriate first aid, and contact emergency services or parents as needed. For serious injuries, we call 911 immediately while providing care within our training level. Our emergency contact information for all students is kept current and readily accessible. Fire evacuation procedures are clearly posted and regularly practiced. For medical emergencies, we have AED equipment on site and staff trained in its use. We maintain incident reporting procedures to document any injuries or safety concerns and to identify areas for improvement. In case of severe weather or other facility threats, we have protocols for safe shelter or evacuation. Our emergency procedures are reviewed and updated regularly, and new staff members receive thorough training before teaching independently.
